Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to identify the effect of the tentative application of Health Promotion Program at a Senior Center and to serve data for develop more of f ctive and generalized programs for the aged.
For the study, the researchers and nursing students provided the health promotion program at a Senior Center twice a week for 12 weeks from March to June in 1997. With a structured questionnaire, the 39 of subjects were interviewed before participating the program, and the remained 27 from them were interviewed again after finishing their program.

1. General characteristics ;
The average of their age was 78. In their marital status, 74.4% of them were alone. More than half of them (53.8%) were uneducated. In their religion, 43.6% of them were Buddist.
They were mainly engaged in farming(41.0%) or housekeeping (20.5 % ). However, there expenditure for living was mostly offered by their son (82.1 % ), and 66.7%0 of them were living with their son and daughter-in-law.

2. Most of the subjects(66.7%) were attending the Senior Center everyday and satisfied with its facilities and activities of the program.
Talking (43.6 %) and playing korean cards (38.5 %) were their main favorites.
For a better program, the subjects wanted to add exercise (53.9 % ), diet program
(20.5%), and trip (17.9%).

3. In their health status ;
more than half of them (59 %) had eye-glasses, 7.7% had a hearing aid and 53.8
had a denture. Most of them (71.8 %) had one or more disease, mostly muscleskeletal disease (arthritis, back pain) was complained( 74.4 %) with ambulation problem(46.2% ).

4. Health behavior of the subject ;
Half of them were smoking. There were significant differences between male and female subjects in their health behavior, such as doing exercises and taking food. The level of health behavior index was average.

5. Health promotion program for the subject;
Most of them (88 %) were satisfied with the tentative health promotion program. The group physical exercise was the most f avorate program. However, in their preference there was a significant difference between female and male.

From the results of this study, the future study for developing a better health promotion program for the aged under the various community based resources should be recommended.
